1963 Ferrari 330 LMB: Parkes and Bandini
The factory sent a Ferrari 330 LMB to Sebring in 1963 for Mike Parkes and Lorenzo Bandini. Parkes went off at the Esses, the fuel tank cracked, and the car retired after 72 laps.
Sebring 1963: With 6 Ferrari 250 GTOs in attendance, you’d think there wouldn’t be room for any more Italian GT beauty at the 12 Hours, but there was! The #19 Ferrari 330 LMB was sent over by the factory to compete, and compete it did, hanging in the top 10 over several hours after the start of the race. With Mike Parkes and Lorenzo Bandini at the helm, the car was among the best. But, just after 2 p.m. in the afternoon, Parkes went off course at the Esses and hit something hard enough to crack the fuel tank. Parkes, being a skilled driver, was able to nurse the car back to the pits but too much damage was done, and the car was retired after 72 laps. The dnf was said to have left Bandini in tears over the disappointment of a lost opportunity.
